Blount County Schools Celebrates Twenty Years of Coupon Book Sells

Once again this weekend students in Blount County will begin disturbing the Partners for Kids Patron Checkbooks to thousands of parents and neighbors eager to save a little money during these tough economic times. The 2009 fall season marks twenty years of the county school's most visible fundraiser.  Since 1989 the Patron Checkbooks have generated over three million non-tax dollars for the schools.

Gary Heath, campaign coordinator for the project, announced today, "The reason the program has been so successful is because it is one of those win-win projects; merchants have the opportunity to support the schools while attracting new customers to their doors, schools benefit because even after all expenses seventy-five percent is retained as a profit, and consumers can save thousands of dollars all year by simply using the discount offers."

"Since 1989 the size (number of pages) of the Patron Checkbooks has increased two times, but the books are still only ten dollars each. I really can not think of too many things that haven't increased in price over the past twenty years" Heath stated.

"We're particularly excited about this year's book because it contains more restaurants and dining options than ever before," Heath added. "For a ten dollar donation to the participating school of choice local consumers have the chance to experience some of the areas finished businesses for a fraction of the cost. The book contains over one hundred dollars worth of free stuff and over seventy Buy One – Get One Free discounts offers, Heath explained.

Jake Jones, assistant principal at Porter School stated, "The books sell themselves. Everyone wants to save money and the Patron Checkbooks are a way of doing that. Usually you a can use just one coupon and cover the cost of the book, everything else is savings in the pocket," Jones added. "It is a great program!"

Blount County Schools Coupon Book Sell Extended Due to Illness

"Since the schools closed earlier this week in an effort to slow the spreading of the flu, our office has been swamped with calls from consumers who were waiting to buy a copy of this year's coupon book," stated Gary Heath with Partners for Kids. "I've never seen anything like it," Heath continued. "Apparently a lot of people have been waiting until the last minute to purchase a discount book and with the sell scheduled to end this week and with the schools closed many are worried they missed the short window of time to purchase a coupon book."

"We've been in contact with most of the schools and everyone agreed to extend the availability of the Patron Checkbooks until Friday, September 11, 2009. Even though some schools are running low on books, we hope that everyone that wants a book will get one," Heath stated.

The Partners for Kids Patron Checkbook contains over 200 significant discounts from area businesses and is a major fund-raiser for many local schools. The concept of the project calls upon citizens to donate $10 to the participating school of choice. Each patron then receives a Patron Checkbook. Even after all expenses, schools retain seventy-five percent profit from each book sold. The program has raised over three million non-tax dollars for local education. Coupon book profits have built new playgrounds and computer labs; it has supported field trips and reading programs, as well as purchased many other tools for learning.
